Te Manawanui - By George & Bayliss

Making Puti Puti
By George and Bayliss

This week, the middle team were introduced to a Maori treasure, putiputi, which are flax flowers.

Our room, Room 9, teamed up with Room 7, a senior class. The seniors taught the middles how to make putiputi to give to the people who are coming to the opening of St Clair School’s new building, Te Manawanui.

A main step was weaving, and the seniors were practicing to do weaving with two pieces of flax to improve their skills.

When we were ready with our prepared flax, we started with four pieces of flax each. We were weaving, over, under, over and under.
Weaving in circles over and over, till we got at least three inches of flax.
After that we did a knot. That was the sign that we were finished.

We put it away somewhere safe where the stalk wouldn’t break.

Room 9 thought this was fun, frustrating, hard and for some people… …easy.

  1. A lovely piece of writing Bayliss and George. You maintained a 3rd person perspective right through this - well done. I thought it was a fun week and as a teacher it was lovely seeing so many children learning a new skill! Te Manawanui is going to be a great place for learning loads of new things. Mrs Wood :)

  2. You really did capture that event in writing so well, Bayliss and George. It was a fun but frustrating time to start with for me as well. But I was so proud of the puti puti that we all made once we were finished. I noticed how much the guests enjoyed their gift from us and how much Room 7 enjoyed working with your class :) Ms B
